The real world and what will probably happen:
The U.S. is a post-industrial society, and as the world is getting more globalized and industry is getting more efficient, automated, and outsourced to the places it can be done the cheapest.
Electric cars and solar energy panels are becoming more common and more cheaper.( In acouple of decades they might be average things to have.
MY Alternate universe: (In which this picture takes place.)
Major differences between the U.S. and china around energy reserves break down the national diplomatic scene, leading both countries on emperial campaigns to snatch up other countries for there natural resources. Thus leading the U.S. back to being more self sufficient. (AKA more Industry, including the steel mill pictured.)
Instead of focusing on alternatives, many countries resort to Shale oil, despite the costs, and go to great lengths to secure and harvest as much as they can, while decreasing pollution controls to get it as cheaply as possible, the result is exponential growth throughout much of the U.S. during the 21st century, the side effect is the extreme consumerism this causes, as cars get more enormous than ever, and products and industry less efficient, only concerned about cheapness (This will haunt them in the 22nd century when reserves peak.)
The U.S., constantly at war with some country or another throughout most of the century has steel mills like this producing mass amounts of steel for both domestic and military use.
